Crossroads, Freeways, Collisions

Professor of History Emeritus Bill Issel, a Fulbright scholar at the West University of Timisoara in 2017-2018, has remained in constant touch with his Romanian colleagues and students and has continued working with them. The latest result of this collaboration is the article published by Bill Issel in the collective volume Ideology, Identity and the US: Crossroads, Freeways, Collisions: “I'm feeling privileged to have my chapter on the role of the ideology and practice of what I call white power localism in recent American political culture appear alongside contributions by Romanian colleagues and fellow Fulbright scholars from the USA.”

Essay Writing Workshop for Fulbright/Graduate School Applicants

On Thursday, March 5, the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission hosted the workshop titled “Making Your Way to U.S. Admission: Essay Writing Approaches for Graduates,” coordinated by Dr. Alexandra Tipei, McGill University, U.S. Fulbright Scholar Grantee.
During the workshop, which lasted over an hour, Dr. Tipei provided the participants– mainly prospective Fulbright applicants – with useful tips on how to approach the two essays, as well as best practices for steering clear of plagiarism. The participants also received valuable advice on how to present more effectively their study/research objectives and demonstrate the professional, personal, and social qualities which would make a Romanian applicant a good fit for the Fulbright Program, as well as an attractive international applicant to a US university.
Excerpts of essays belonging to former successful applicants were also discussed, enabling the audience to identify the more effective ways of conveying expertise and making a strong case for oneself.
Our guest speaker also encouraged the participants to start searching for programs fitting their profile, as prioritizing and narrowing down university options can be an important step in crafting well-defined study or research plans.

Frontiers of Boyhood

Martin Woodside was a U.S. Fulbright student to Romania back in 2009-2010, his research involving a comparative study between U.S. Culture and Modern Romanian Poetry. Martin’s new volume has just been released:
“It turns out all those years of research and writing were not in vain; my book Frontiers of Boyhood: Imagining America Past and Future is now out from Oklahoma University Press. What's this book about, you say? Well, it's about dime novels, Wild West shows, Mark Twain, and playing Cowboys and Indians. A lot of it ended up being about Buffalo Bill. This generous blurb from James Marten describes it pretty well:
Martin Woodside deftly interprets constructions of region, gender, race, and class, and draws on thinkers from Herbert Spencer to Frederick Jackson Turner, and from G. Stanley Hall to Kenneth and Mamie Clark, to show how the West, real and imagined, shaped juvenile literature, performance, and play, and how youth shaped notions about the West’s meaning.

Americana Folk Music @ National Museum of Literature

On Saturday the 22nd of February, Fulbright ETA Colin Cutler played a concert of Americana folk music and original music at the National Museum of Literature in Bucharest. Currently teaching at "Lucian Blaga" University in Sibiu, he first played at the museum with Bulgarian Fulbrighter Lilly Drumeva O’Reilly in December. He was joined this time by Ana Maria Dumitru and Ovidiu Mihăilescu.

“It was an absolute pleasure to share the songs, a bit about the history of the folk tunes, their diaspora via Scottish and Irish immigration and the African-American contribution of both musical styles, songs, and instruments like the banjo. I am very grateful to Loreta and the museum for having me back, everyone in the audience, and to Ovidiu and Ana Maria for joining me on stage!”

The director of PR at the museum, Elena Loreta Popa, said, “Colin managed with positivity, smile and warm heart to conquer the audience present at the concert, as did the two guests, Ana Maria Dumitru and Ovidiu Mihăilescu.”
