WEBINAR: The Fulbright Student Award – Practical Suggestions for a Successful Application

Join our webinar on Wednesday, March 18, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., to meet Fulbright alumnus Ciprian Dumitrache for useful advice on the application process and practical suggestions about the application essays. He will share his own experience as an international student at two prestigious U.S. universities and talk about the benefits of the Fulbright Student Award. In the second part of the webinar Ciprian will be ready to answer your questions.

As a Fulbright Student grantee, Ciprian Dumitrache received a Master’s degree in the field of Aerospace Propulsion Systems at Georgia Institute of Technology in 2011. Following his Fulbright experience, he enrolled in a doctoral program in Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University which awarded him a PhD in 2017.

The Annual American Studies Student Conference, hosted by the Fulbright Commission

On March 10, 2020, the Fulbright Commission had the pleasure of hosting once again the annual American Studies Student Conference organized by the English Department of the University of Bucharest. This year’s edition saw a significant increase in the number of participants, with more than 20 participants, several of whom came from around the country, from Timisoara to Iasi, Constanta and Brasov. The quality of the papers and the dynamic presentation style were highly appreciated by the audience, while the conference jury had the difficult task of nominating only one paper – written and presented by Ruxandra Gîdei, 2nd year English major – as the winner of the “Dan Grigorescu” Award for the best American Studies conference paper. Our congratulations to all the student participants and their faculty advisors!

Fulbright Alumnus Receives Best Paper Award at AIAA Aviation 2019 Meeting

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) awarded Dr. Ciprian Dumitrache’s paper the “Best Paper Award” at the AIAA Aviation 2019 meeting. The article, co-authored with his collaborators from Colorado State University (CSU), is a study of laser ignition using a resonant ionization scheme for oxygen molecules to achieve gas pre-ionization inside the combustible mixture. The novelty of this work consists in the significant reduction of the energy required for ignition compared to previous approaches, while additionally offering more control over the parameters of the ignition plasma. If implemented on real engines, this method could reduce emissions and increase engine efficiency.

Ciprian Dumitrache’s contribution to the study was developing the 2+1 REMPI preionization scheme during his last few months of the postdoc program in the U.S. and co-mentoring the first author together with prof. Azer P. Yalin (his former PhD advisor at CSU).

As a Fulbright Student grantee, Ciprian Dumitrache received a Master’s degree in the field of Aerospace Propulsion Systems at Georgia Institute of Technology in 2011. Following his Fulbright experience, he continued with a doctoral program in mechanical engineering at Colorado State University which awarded him a PhD degree.

The AIAA is the largest aerospace professional society in the world, boasting 35,000 members from 80 different countries. The abovementioned prize is awarded for the best paper within the Plasma Dynamics and Lasers section of the flagship events: "Aviation" and "Scitech".
