Cross-Atlantic Romania - U.S. Student Negotiation Exercise

Dr. E. Patrick McDermott, Professor of Legal Studies and Management at Franklin P. Perdue School of Business, Salisbury University, and Fulbright Scholar in Romania in 2018-2019, has continued the collaboration with his Romanian host university and has recently completed a joint online class with his colleague at the University of Bucharest School of Law, Professor Adriana Almășan.

Here is Dr. McDermott’s account of the joint exercise: “We paired my Perdue School of Business Negotiation class with her Law School Negotiation class for our first Annual Cross-Atlantic Negotiation Competition. We paired one Romanian student with a U.S. student for one Team and they negotiated with another separate U.S. - Romanian team. We did this so the students worked on the same team (cross-cultural collaboration) and also competed (cross-cultural competition in negotiation problem solving). Using Zoom for the real-time negotiations, with other students observing, we had 7 rooms of negotiation and students moving from room to room to watch. We also used Google to gather immediate student feedback.

Our fact pattern was a Vaccine negotiation between supplier and distributor - so timely. There were also confidential instructions for each team strategy. The best team was awarded a $25 Starbucks gift certificate per member - courtesy of the Law Office of E. Patrick McDermott LLC and the TAMC Law Group of Bucharest.

From the student feedback, we can report that the negotiation was a rousing success. Without Fulbright Romania, this could never have happened.”

In Memoriam — Keith Hitchins

We learn with profound regret the passing away of outstanding historian and scholar Keith Hitchins, Professor at the University of Illinois and the first American grantee to study in Romania under the auspices of the U.S.-Romania Cultural Exchange program back in 1960. It was the beginning of a long brilliant career of studies on Romanian and South-East European history, during which Professor Hitchins published an impressive number of volumes in Romanian and English, such as Rumanian National Movement in Transylvania, 1780-1849 (Harvard University Press, 1969), Romania, 1866-1947 and The Romanians, 1774-1866 (both published by Oxford University Press, 1994 and 1996) and A Concise History of Romania (Cambridge University Press, 2014).

Professors Hitchins has not only essentially contributed to Romanian historiography and to define Romanian identity, but he was a first and outstanding participant in the Fulbright exchanges. In his own words, quoted from his speech during the Anniversary of 50 Years of the Fulbright Program in Romania in June 2010:

“After a period of strain in the late 1940s and 1950s, regular relations between Romania and the United States were gradually re-established in the 1960s and 1970s. It is reasonable to think that the cultural exchange was not only a consequence of this thaw, but also contributed decisively to a deepening of what had been a long-term, mutually satisfactory relationship. Our gathering today is striking testimony to the strength of the bonds of culture and friendship that thousands of American and Romanian Fulbrighters have forged in the last half-century. They and all those who have served the Fulbright program with such dedication have laid the solid foundations for many more half-centuries of fruitful exchanges to come.”

Thank you, Professor Hitchins, and may you rest in peace!

EdUSA Romania Intern Coordinates Virtual Essay Writing Workshop

On October 27, Maricela Dominguez, EducationUSA Romania VSFS intern and senior at Florida International University, joined the Fulbright-EducationUSA Romania team for a virtual essay writing workshop, for the benefit of Romanian high school students.
Throughout the webinar, Maricela provided practical tips to help students approach the personal essay, deftly guiding them through interactive self-discovery activities as a way to zoom in on the core of their personal story and what distinguishes them from their peers. She also highlighted the importance of thorough research and painstaking revision.
Participants eagerly contributed to the discussion and had a chance to ask questions on the “do’s” and “don’ts” of essay writing.

EdUSA Romania Virtual Intern Connects with Romanian Students via Webinar

On October 19, we kicked off our Fulbright-EducationUSA Romania fall webinar series with an engaging presentation entitled “Beyond the Classroom: Life on American College Campuses”, featuring guest speaker Boston Kistka, one of our EducationUSA Romania VSFS interns and graduate assistant at SUNY-University at Buffalo.
Participants in the event, high school students from Bucharest and elsewhere, had a chance to learn more about daily life on a U.S. campus, from practical aspects, such as accommodation, to the myriad activities an undergraduate student can join in, while attending a U.S. university.
A large portion of the webinar was allotted to the Q&A section, in which Romanian students asked their own questions, on topics ranging from cultural adjustment to financial aid opportunities. Boston provided the participants with useful tips and encouraged them to get in touch with the FEAC-EducationUSA team for personalized guidance through the application process.
